Show character through photographic choices
A portrait does not need an elaborate setting to hold attention. Distance, camera position, a change in expression or the relationship between the subject and their surroundings can create a distinct point of view.
Choose the frames that communicate something specific. Several technically polished images with almost identical expressions may tell less than a smaller selection with a meaningful progression.
Use monochrome intentionally
Review how light separates the face, hair, clothing and background. Deep shadows can be expressive, but check that they support the image rather than unintentionally hiding its subject. Retouching should work with the texture and character you want to retain.
If colour is essential to the portrait, consider our moody and muted-colour direction instead of converting it only to match a label.
Edit a portrait series
Begin with an image that establishes the subject or mood. A closer frame, a quieter gesture or a wider environmental view can add depth if it belongs to the same story. Consider how the final image changes or completes what the opening suggested.
